What an unforgettable afternoon! Nearly 650 guests gathered at the Sheraton Grand Seattle for the YMCA of Greater Seattle's 2024 Celebrating Community Changemakers luncheon. The room was filled with an electric energy as we came together to honor remarkable individuals and celebrate the power of connection, service, and community.
We were deeply moved by Dr. Danielson’s inspiring words on the urgent issues facing youth today. His call to action resonated with everyone in attendance, emphasizing the critical need for community connection, especially for our young people.
"Our communities, our youth deserve our best sustaining efforts to usher in worthy change. And you, you all deserve the soul healing uplift of lifting a soul up." - Dr. Danielson
This year, we had the distinct pleasure of honoring Sheri Schultz, the Schultz Family Foundation, and Eric Pettigrew for their tireless dedication to improving the lives of others. As Richard A. Jones, a former recipient of the award and current Judge of the Western District of Washington, noted,
“There's so many young people today that feel disenfranchised, disconnected, depressed, lonely, because they don't have a life experience of meaning or value. But when these young people see somebody like Eric Pettigrew, they look up to him as a leader and say, ‘I want to be like that type of person and I want to give back to the community.’”
This recognition of Pettigrew’s impact was a powerful moment that inspired all who attended.
Reflecting on Sheri Schultz, Vivek Varma, CEO and Vice Chair of the Schultz Family Foundation, said,
“Sheri is delighted to be in such esteemed company with all of the other honorees... The Y is a pillar of strength and wisdom poised to contribute even more in this moment of transformation in King County”
During the luncheon, we shared stories of our Y Heroes Everyday – those individuals whose volunteerism and service shape the heart of the YMCA. As Pearl Noreen, a YMCA Advisory Board Member and honoree, expressed,
“I volunteer because I believe in generativity, the concept that each generation takes care of the next generation. Volunteering has allowed me to build relationships and make our community a better place to live.”
These stories exemplify the power of community-driven change, reminding us all of the impact one person can make.
Thanks to the generosity of our attendees and supporters, we are thrilled to announce that we raised nearly $400,000 dollars (and counting!). These vital funds will support our efforts to address youth mental health, combat social isolation, and create more spaces for connection and belonging in our community.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s event, scheduled for September 24, 2025. Let’s continue building a stronger, more vibrant community together.
Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and made this event a true celebration of changemakers. Together, we are making a profound impact, one connection at a time.
