The Y Supports Military Members
Partnerships to fight for those who fight for us. The YMCA of Greater Seattle and the YMCA of the Armed Forces have partnered to offer memberships and respite care for qualified active-duty, veterans, and retired military members and their families at Y's throughout the country. We also support veterans and retired military personnel with a $0 join fee and a host of programming to promote healthy living and connection to the community.
The Military Outreach Initiative offers military members and their families access to vital resources that promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. These services offer extra support during deployment so families can spend quality time together, meet and relate to other military families in similar situations, and enjoy fun and healthy activities in a warm, supportive environment. With one parent away from the household, the remaining caregiver can bring their children to a safe and nurturing environment at the Y for play and fun while they take time to recharge, enabling them to better process the added responsibilities and stress that may come.
Since its onset, the initiative:
- Has provided 87,000 Y memberships and nearly 43,000 private fitness memberships to military families
- Has benefited more than 164,000 military children
- Is supported by 1,700 YMCAs and nearly 2,500 private fitness facilities
