February is American Heart Month, a time when all people are encouraged to focus on their cardiovascular health.

Heart disease is very common. In the United States, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups. In 2022, 1 in every 5 deaths in the United States was caused by heart disease.

High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease. Nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, which puts them at risk for heart disease and stroke. And just 1 in 4 people with high blood pressure has it under control.

Here are some simple tips to consider to lower your risk for heart disease:

  1. Know your numbers! Consult with your physician to learn what healthy blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood cholesterol numbers look like for you.
  2. Make sure you include plenty of fruits and fresh greens in your meals.
  3. Reduce your consumption of food that is fried, heavy in salt, or very oily.
  4. Take care of your mental health.
  5. Get plenty of sleep.
  6. Do the things you enjoy, like spending time with loved ones and finding time for recreation.
  7. Learn to have a good sense of humor.
  8. Find ways to be more active. Walking, cycling, or swimming are great options!
  9. Keep going for regular checkups with your physician, especially if your family has had a history of heart disease.
  10. Avoid processed food. Prioritize fresh food, fruits, and vegetables.
  11. Get closer to nature. Even something as simple as a short hike or growing a small plant in a pot in your home can be very therapeutic.
