Last October, YMCA Camp Orkila hosted an opportunity for families of all shapes, sizes, and abilities to unwind and reconnect away from the pressures of their family’s busy lives.
"We have never been able to enjoy these activities with our son before,” said one camper parent. “It was the best 24 hours I’ve ever had with him in his 10 years with us."
Many of the 17 families who attended were from University of Washington’s Autism Center. Campers and their families enjoyed arts and crafts, boating, archery, the giant swing, climbing wall, campfire, skits and more. Thoughtful accommodations allowed the families with special needs opportunities to enjoy an overnight camp experience together.
This is just one of many ways the Y is transforming the camp experience to make it more accessible and welcoming for all. In addition to the Exceptional Families Camp, the Y also hosts camp weekends for Latina/Latino, African American males/females, and LGBTQ family camps.
