In partnership with community volunteers, YMCA BOLD & GOLD had the incredible opportunity to lead six young refugees from Afghanistan on a weeklong backpacking trip to the stunning North Cascades National Park.

For many Afghan refugees, the journey to the United States is fraught with challenges. Fleeing conflict and instability, they often face a daunting adjustment period in their new home—navigating language barriers, cultural differences, and the stress of leaving everything familiar behind. Amid these hurdles, outdoor experiences can provide not only a much-needed escape but also a chance to build community and resilience.

During the trip, the group backpacked over 20 miles, exploring breathtaking landscapes and immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. One of the highlights was a scenic boat ride across Ross Lake, which allowed everyone to take in the serene surroundings and reflect on their journeys.

Throughout the week, laughter and camaraderie filled the air as the group bonded over riddles, s'mores, and a newfound love for card games—especially Uno. These moments of joy and connection were a beautiful reminder of the power of shared experiences in fostering friendship and support.

The success of this trip exemplifies the transformative impact of outdoor adventures, especially for those facing significant life transitions. One of the participants shared:

“This program is making a positive impact on my life because I get to learn a lot of things about backpacking and nature.”

By stepping into the wilderness, these young people not only embraced the challenges of backpacking but also strengthened their ties to one another, creating lasting memories and friendships.

As we continue to support Afghan refugees in their journey towards stability and community integration, we remain grateful for our generous donors who share our commitment to providing transformative outdoor experiences. Together, we are not just creating outdoor enthusiasts but also a supportive network for those navigating the complexities of resettlement.
