Teaching YMCA values and having conversations about them is an essential part of camp because they help create a safe space for campers to explore their feelings and develop a sense of belonging. One evening at Camp Colman, after enjoying a karaoke session in the lodge, one of our counselors shared the following story that happened during a reflective session, what we call “Embers” with the 11- and 12-year-old girls in the cabin.
The counselor initiated a discussion about beauty standards, sharing their own experiences with negative self-image that began around their camper’s age. With the rise of social media, they recognized that these feelings might be even more intense for kids today. This led to a heartfelt conversation about insecurity, and we discovered that every camper had faced struggles with their appearance, often thinking they were alone.
It was cathartic for everyone as they experienced their peers sharing similar feelings. They acknowledged that these insecurities are not personal failings but symptoms of societal pressures. They emphasized the importance of treating themselves with the same kindness they would offer a friend, and they could see the impact this had on each other.
“In my role as a camp counselor, I frequently engage in conversations about self-image with female campers. I've noticed an increase in discussions about food and body image, which seem more prevalent than when I was their age. My goal during their week at camp is to instill the message that they are enough, especially since outside influences often tell them otherwise. This mission is personal for me. After developing anorexia in 2020, I believe the absence of camp during that time contributed to my struggles. The sense of belonging that camp provides is crucial for mental health, especially for young girls. I want to ensure these campers never experience what I did." - Camp Counselor
Even a brief conversation can make a significant difference, and we hope the memories created together empower young people long after they leave camp. Together, at Camp Colman, we are fostering an environment where everyone feel seen, heard, and valued.
These transformative experiences are made possible thanks to the generosity of YMCA supporters. Scholarships funded by donations allow young people, regardless of their financial circumstances, to participate. Thank you!
