A Leader in Water for more than 100 Years

Since 1909, when the Y first began teaching group swimming lessons at the Detroit YMCA, we have been a leader in the world of aquatics. We continue that tradition by providing Safety Around Water instruction to millions of kids today. Learning to swim not only makes kids feel safer in and around water but also helps to develop important problem-solving skills and bolster self-esteem.

Y aquatics programs include swim lessons for all ages and levels of experience, lifeguard training and certification, water fitness classes, family recreational swim, pool parties, and even swim teams (varies by location). From kiddos who are just learning to swim to experienced aquaphiles and seniors looking for a low-impact workout, the Y has a water-based activity or swim program for you.

Our aquatics centers feature 25-yard-long lap pools and many also have a second activity pool with an average temperature of 86 degrees. Safety is our priority, so qualified lifeguards are on duty at all times. Amenities include zero entry access, ADA chair lifts, water slides, splash features, hot tubs, and saunas (varies by location). Weight belts, foam barbells, and kickboards are also available at most locations.

You get all this in a clean, comfortable, heated indoor space that members can enjoy year-round. Plus, we operate an outdoor community pool at Cottage Lake during the summer.
